Anxiety Disorders: Consequences and Ways of Dealing with Them

Specifically, anxiety disorders are common mental health disorders which affect a large population of people globally. These disorders are defined by the presence of irrational fears, concerns and anxieties, which can interfere with activities and decrease the level of functioning. Both primary and secondary ways of reducing the effects of anxiety disorders involve identifying the causes and searching for ways to cope with them.

Causes of Anxiety Disorders

The causes of anxiety disorders are complex and include genetic, biological, environmental and psychological factors.

Genetic Predisposition:

It has been found that there are next of kin influences and therefore people who have family members with such conditions are likely to develop similar diseases. Research done on twins has revealed the fact that there are higher chances of anxiety disorders being inherited in cases of identical twins than the fraternal ones.

Biological Factors:

Current anxiety disorders can be linked to certain areas of the brain as well as specific neurotransmitter systems. This involves dysregulation of the functional capabilities of the amygdala, which is an organ that processes fear and the emotions associated with it. Furthermore, disturbances in the concentration and activity of neurotransmitters such as serotonin, norepinephrine, and gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) are known to be linked to increased levels of anxiety. These neurotransmitters play roles in processes that modulate mood and stress and if disrupted, cause anxiety.

Environmental Influences:

Some of the factors that may help to develop an anxiety disorder include traumatic events like physical or sexual abuse, bereavement, or recent major life changes. They also warn that chronic stress related to relationships, work, or financial uncertainty can also worsen it. Special attention should be paid to the circumstances during a person’s childhood, for example, being bullied or neglected, as this can affect their predisposition to anxiety in the future. In addition, some environmental stimuli like violence or instability in the community can cause anxiety to continue existing.

Psychological Factors:

According to the cognitive theories, people diagnosed with anxiety disorders are characterized by dysfunctional thought processes like magnification of threat, polarized and diffuse thoughts, and rumination. The following cognitive distortions commonly perpetrate anxiety, producing a cycle of negative thoughts and feelings. Characteristics like high levels of neuroticism and low levels of self esteem also play a role in the formation and chronicity of anxiety disorders.

Anxiety disorders are complex mental health conditions that are characterized by excessive fear and anxiety for a particular object or event in a certain situation.

Coping with anxiety disorders involves receiving the help of a doctor as well as employing some do- it- yourself techniques.

Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT):

CbT is a time-honored and empirically supported treatment that is oriented toward restructuring maladaptive attitudes and perceptions. By skill desensitization and cognitive transformations it mean doing away with wrong ways of perceiving things and slowly exposing the patient to what he or she fears. CBT works to stop the pattern of anxiety by treating anxiety as a learned behavior and providing skills to treat the symptoms.

Medication:

Pharmacotherapy can also be part of the anxiety disorders’ cure. Serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) and serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs) are usually prescribed to balance chemical levels to decrease anxiety symptoms. It can be prescribed for short term use; however, they have addiction potential and should not be used as long term medications. It is crucial to discuss with a medical professional for proper identification of the right course of treatment.

Mindfulness and Relaxation Techniques:

Other techniques that are used to lessen anxiety may include cognitive therapy where a person is taught how to engage in mindful activities such as meditation, deep breathing, and progressive relaxation. These techniques help people pay attention to their experiences in a non-critical manner, thus helping the process of desensitization be more effective.

Lifestyle Modifications:

Adopting better lifestyles positively influences anxiety levels in numerous ways. Exercising has been found to decrease stress levels and increase happiness due to the production of endorphins, as well as increasing overall health. The diet containing vitamins and other nutrients and free from caffeine and refined sugar may result in stabilizing of mood and energy levels. Proper rest is also important because sleep loss seems to worsen anxiety disorder’s manifestations. One can enhance their sleep by creating a sleeping schedule and having a proper sleep environment that enhances the quality of sleep.

Innovations in Knowledge Discovery and Care

Modern approaches in research and medication have deemed well for people who are struggling with anxiety disorders. These innovations are providing the path for the enhanced and more efficient treatment and the management of this condition.

Neurofeedback

Neurofeedback is a relatively new intervention strategy that essentially teach patients how to change their brain wave activity. Specifically, people can practice self-control over their own brain activity in real-time, therefore diminishing the severity of anxiety. Research has proven that neurofeedback can be helpful in several situations by helping individuals suffering from generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

Pharmacogenetics:

Pharmacogenetics means the study of genetic variations in relation to the pharmacological drugs that a given individual undergoes. This field is proven to be useful for such a significant extent of developing individual approaches to the treatment of anxiety disorders because it can determine which treatment with the use of specific medications is harmless and effective for a specific patient. It can help enhance treatment efficacy and decrease the chances of wrongly identifying effective drugs through testing them out on patients.

Psychedelic-Assisted Therapy:

Over the last few years, there have been a variety of new findings regarding the relationship between psychedelics such as psilocybin or MDMA and anxiety disorders, especially PTSD and cancer-related anxiety. These substances, if administered in a controlled clinical environment, are often useful for reaching deep psychological.
