It is important to embrace this correlation towards the provision of care that encompasses both the body and spirit. In this essay, we discuss the effects of chronic illness on the mental state and stress the need for multidisciplinary treatment approaches.

Depression is one of the main mental health disorders that can affect any person, including those with chronic diseases. Such symptoms as chronic pain, fatigue, and restrictions as a result of the illness may cause hopelessness and desperation. Also, the fact that individuals with RA have to continually monitor their symptoms and the possibility of losing their independence may lead to high levels of depression and poor quality of life. Such threats include possible worsening of health, lack of financial security, and the possibility to perform essential tasks. This uncertainty results in anxiety, which is defined as excessive worry, restlessness, or difficulty in concentration.

This is because anxiety is likely to worsen the physical symptoms, thus perpetuating a cycle. For instance, chronic diseases deprive an individual of the capacity to engage in other social activities hence making them socially secluded. Transport problems, tiredness, and having to deal with the symptoms often lead to the isolation of the patient and minimized contact with friends and family. This isolation can compound mental health issues, as social support is a foundation of one’s emotional health. Chronic conditions in today’s society need changes in diet, exercise, and daily activities of the patient, among other modifications.

These changes may result in a loss of identity and self-esteem, especially when the disease hinders one from working or engaging in other activities. This feeling can be disturbing and lead to mental health problems due to the perceived loss of the previous self. Coping strategies are crucial when it comes to the mental health of an individual living with chronic illness. These may include getting therapy, participating in various support groups, and having a solid network of people to turn to.

The most useful approach and treatment methods are cognitive-behavioral therapy and mindfulness-based stress reduction. For chronic illness patients, the focus should not only be on the physical aspect but also the mental part. Individuals must receive care that encompasses primary care and mental health to be provided in integrated care models. It can assist in the early detection of mental illnesses and thus enhance overall well-being among citizens.
